If one sees the more acknowledged abstract works of Olazo as attempts in embodying pure form, that is, a glance into the spiritual, this exhibit clarifies that the spiritual is also seen in the portrayal of the densest of forms - the human figure, specifically, the female figure.

​There is an innate purpose existing in the ethos of survival, a discovery in linking permanence and transience in lineage and continuity.  Shown in different angles, with different mediums, and different qualities of rendering, one sees that the artist is a pilgrim, an adventurer, a navigator of constraints.

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines is proud to present an exhibit of Romulo Olazo paintings, titled “Olazo Large-Scale,” on view from July 15 to September 8, 2017, at Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (3F Hallway Gallery).

The first major exhibition organized after artist Olazo’s death, Olazo Large-Scale re-affirms the master’s place as a maker — and marker — of grand productions. The exhibit also re-introduces his work — now his legacy — to the contemporary audience, as well as reconnects the artist’s roots to the CCP.

The Swirls Series is a small segment stemming from the larger Diaphanous Series and as the title suggests, the central circular pattern conveys a sense of completeness and resolution that is most satiating. Olazo's father used to construct pin-wheels for him to play with, that seized the contracting and expanding rays of light; one can see the magical childhood influence of this in the paintings. The Swirls Series is a variation of the nuclear Diaphanous Series within Olazo's oeuvre, and it portrays a resoundingly playful, jovial and altogether harmonious collection of paintings that capture the alluring characteristics of colour and light in a spectacularly uplifting fashion.

To celebrate the life of this truly exceptional man and document his artistry over the years, Paseo Gallery, in collaboration with the artist’s family, unveiled a 388-page coffee table book last July 23.

The book entitled, Romulo Olazo features the vivid and fascinating photographs of Olazo’s crafts: majority of it are Diaphonous paintings, while the rest are graphic and figurative oeuvres. Also featured are the artist’s pictures that detail his journey for many years.
